Iowa is home to city with the richest population
Cities such as Beverly Hills and Miami are synonymous with the wealthy, but surprisingly enough, neither of them are home to the richest population in America, according to US News and World Report. After analyzing data of the nation's metropolitan areas, experts have determined that Des Moines, Iowa, has the highest median income in the country relative to the cost of living.

Running right behind the Hawkeye State capital were Washington, D.C., Worcester, Massachusetts, and Ogden, Utah. Experts used median household incomes and the cost of living index in order to determine the adjusted income, the news outlet reports. Cities in Texas, Colorado, Wisconsin, Georgia and North Carolina rounded out the top ten, possibly making them an appealing place to relocate to.

In order to develop the cost of living index, the Council for Economic Research figures in the price of groceries, utilities, healthcare, transportation and several other basic goods and services, in the area.

"Generally speaking, the top 10 least expensive cities - that is, those with the lowest COLIs - are in Texas, and the top 10 most expensive are in the New York area or California," Dean Frutiger, project manager for the council, told the news outlet.
