Physically moving a house is an option that some New Jersey residents whose homes were built in flood-prone areas are taking advantage of.
Recent flooding in northern New Jersey is causing some homeowners to have to resort to extreme measures, including raising and moving their homes, according to North Jersey Homes.
The source reports that owners of some homes that reside in flood zones are requesting that their homes be lifted or moved in order to avoid damages caused by constant flooding. According to certain companies that specialize in house lifting and moving, these requests are pretty common in the area. "Definitely, flooding is the biggest reason that people request raising a house," Larry Myroncuk, of Myroncuk House Movers, told the source. However, for moving entire homes, the motivation seems to more frequently be preserving historic homes or those with sentimental value. For example, Myroncuk told the source some homes that require a great deal of craftsmanship would cost "millions" today - much more than the expense to move one. Though the company moves entire homes, they have had few requests for the procedure lately - only one in the last five or six years, the source reported - possibly due to high costs to do so. Though moving a home is an intriguing option, the expense, somewhere around $100,000, may be too much for many struggling homeowners to bear. Nevada, the state with the highest foreclosure rate according to CNBC, has one filing for every 119 households. More News |
