A report warns against hiring unlicensed movers
May is dubbed National Moving Month because it is the busiest time of year for relocating to new places, according to the Better Business Bureau. In 2010 the BBB received almost 9,000 complaints against movers. People may be duped by unlicensed moving companies and end up having their belongings held hostage, said the source.

"Checking a mover's credentials is critical and easy. Last year alone, consumers relied on BBB more than 1 million times for finding a trustworthy mover," said Stephen A. Cox, president and CEO of the Council of Better Business Bureaus.

Last year 40 million Americans moved to new homes, making the moving business quite lucrative, according to CBS. This number also means there are a lot of people to take advantage of. Anyone can claim to be a mover, but experts believe people should only trust BBB accredited businesses.

When choosing a moving company it is important to research their background, according to the BBB. Interstate movers must be licensed and there are more than 17,000 company reviews on the bureau's website.

If there is time, getting more than one estimate from a company will allow the moving party to find the best option.
