Florida comes in just behind Texas as the most popular relocation destinations
Southern states were the most popular destinations for Americans who are moving to new homes, according to a new survey.
That may be because economic forces are driving them to regions of the country where taxes and cost of living are cheaper, suggested Relocation.com's latest moving survey. The website polled 1,086 Americans who have recently made moves, finding that most (12 percent) relocated to Texas, with Florida coming in second at 10 percent. California remained a favorite destination for movers but slipped to third at 8 percent, after taking the top spot in February's survey. Two other Southern states - North Carolina (5 percent) and Georgia (4 percent) rounded out the top five. A growing proportion of respondents - about 39 percent - said they moved because of unspecified financial reasons. The next largest group (18 percent) said they relocated to live in a better neighborhood and the desire to be closer to family and friends came in as the third most popular reason, at 17 percent. Florida and Texas have traditionally been popular destinations because neither state has an income tax and home prices are generally lower there.
