Florida does not have the oldest average population
Contrary to popular belief, the average age of Florida residents is not the highest in the country, according the CNNMoney. The oldest general population resides much further North, all the way up in Maine.
The median age in the Pine Tree State last year was 42.7 according to the National Census Bureau. This number is five years higher than the national average and two years higher than Florida, the media outlet reports. "This has been going on for years," Jim Breece, an economist at the University of Maine, told the news source. "The biggest factors are the low birth rate here and the out-migration of young families looking for opportunities." Maine was not the only state to age, in fact the entire country's median age grew almost two-years since the last study was taken in 2000. Maine's neighbor to the South, Vermont, has the second oldest population at a median of 41.3, with West Virginia and New Hampshire coming a close third and fourth, according to the news source. Florida did in fact have the largest number of senior citizens, indicating they may still be relocating there for retirement, while Utah came in as the youngest state. More News |
