Homeowners should take extra precautions to keep pests out of their homes this winter.
The Insurance Information Institute reported that winter-related home disasters cause more than $1 billion in losses annually across the country. In addition, homeowners in the eastern third of the country are expected to experience colder than normal temperatures this winter, according to the Farmer's Almanac.
To prepare for the winter months, the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety recommend homeowners clean out their gutters to prevent ice damming that can cause water to drip from the ceiling and walls, as well as install gutter guards to prevent debris from interfering with the flow of water away from the house. The institute also suggests owners add extra insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces to save money on escaping heat. This will also prevent snow or ice from melting on rooftops causing it to collapse. An emergency pressure valve should also be added to plumbing systems to protect against increased pressure from frozen pipes that could burst. The Responsible Industry for a Sound Environment also identified steps homeowner can take to prevent pests during the winter season. The organization suggests owners investigate the corners of their home to spot any entryways where pests could enter the home. Next, owners should close up these entryways and maintain a clean home to deter future pests. In addition, all pets should be properly washed and groom to prevent any infestations of pests or infiltration of harmful plants such as poison ivy. More News |
