Consumers should also know their credit score, and if it is too low to qualify for a mortgage, borrowers can make efforts to improve the score before purchasing a home.

It is also important to shop around different lenders and compare loan offerings, the source reported. Mortgage rates can change, and each lender offers different specifics and fees associated with a home loan that consumers should be aware of.

To help consumers locate honest lenders for a new home loan or refinancing of an existing mortgage, the National Mortgage Complaint Center has identified tips to make the search easier. In regards to fees associated with home loans, the center says many lenders will pile on junk mortgage fees to increase revenue. These fees are a red flag to consumers and include: administrative fee, excessive underwriting fees, document preparation fee on the mortgage or title insurance, and credit report fees of more than $30.
