Reports show that Washington, D.C., has the most eco-friendly construction per capita.
Washington, D.C., has the highest number of "green buildings" as certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Program, USA Today reported.
The ranking, derived from U.S. Green Building Council data, show that not only did the District of Columbia boast 25 square feet of green-building space per capita, which is more than any of the 50 states, but also has more registered and certified LEED projects than any U.S. city with 799, according to government records. New York is a close second with 792, the source reported. For the 50 states California, Texas and New York had the most LEED projects. However, none of these states were in the top 10 in regard to a per-capita scale, the source said. The top state for per capita LEED certifications was Nevada, with about 11 square feet. Though this data refers to commercial and institutional space only, some experts believe that advancements in energy-efficient development in those real estate sectors may serve as a precursor for an increase in green residential properties. This is supported by LEED's recently established residential certification and an increased number of people moving into green properties, according to the Boston Globe. More News |
