Movers should protect themselves from injury when packing
Moving to a new home can be exciting, but without taking the proper precautions it can also be painful. The physical strain of packing, lifting and unpacking heavy objects can put an undue pressure on the back, legs and other joints, thereby increasing the risk of injury, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
The AAOS recommends that individuals never lift anything large or awkwardly shaped on their own, even if it appears light. Asking for assistance from friends and family members may both reduce the risk of injury and increase efficiency. Hiring a professional moving company that is familiar with the proper and safe way to pack and move objects may also reduce the risk of injury. The AAOS also suggests packing items in several smaller boxes rather than a few large boxes to avoid over-exertion. Keeping objects below the shoulders when lifting and removing all small throw rugs and other obstacles will also help prevent an accident. Putting safety first by following certain procedures or hiring a moving service can ensure an expedient, safe relocation, allowing the individual or family to enjoy their new surroundings.
