The relocation of a major peanut plants may spell trouble for blue collar workers in New York City.
Famous nut company A.L. Bazzini has announced it will be moving it's processing plant from New York City to another facility in Pennsylvania.
The pending shut down of the factory, which has actively provided a number of well-paying union jobs in its Bronx facility for 125 years, has some concerned about the state of blue-collar workers in the city, the New York Daily News says. The CEO of the company, Rocco Damato, told the source that he would like to keep the plant open in the city, but due to pending state regulations that would require him to make expensive upgrades to the plant, remaining there is not feasible. The source says 57 jobs will be lost as a result of the closing and may add to the woes of blue collar workers in the area. A number of recent shutdowns over the last two years, including the Wonder Bread facility in Queens and the relocation of hummus maker Sabra Dipping, has lead to the loss of numerous union jobs. Though many of the affected workers may find it difficult to find new work in the city, moving to an area solely because it has a low unemployment rate may not be the best option, Wall Street Journal recently advised.
