Chemicals company shuts down Connecticut facility

Officials at Arch Chemicals have announced that they intend to close three East Coast facilities.

The work done at three locations - in Delaware, Georgia and Cheshire, Connecticut - will be consolidated at the company's research center in Alpharetta, Georgia, reported the New Haven Register. Some of the company's employees have been offered the chance to relocate to the Alpharetta location or to the company's headquarters in Norwalk, Connecticut. Those employees will have several weeks to inform the company of their intentions, said the report.

Regarding the company's decision to consolidate workers in Alpharetta, company spokesman Dale Walter told the paper "We have manufacturing operations down there, and we felt it made sense to have our research operations closer. The good news is most of the people who work in Cheshire will be offered an opportunity to follow their jobs to other locations."

According to the report, the company will spend about $6 billion to $8 billion on its consolidation efforts, including up to $4 billion to assist employees with their relocation.

Many companies offer financial assistance to employees who have to relocate for work, although that benefit may be dwindling. A recent report from the Society for Human Resource Management showed that fewer human resource departments were able to offer relocation assistance this year due to tightening purse-strings.
