Seniors can find affordable housing at a new Alaska complex
The ribbon was cut on a new development in Alaska's largest city that will provide housing to seniors.
Eklutna Estates was built in Anchorage with $3.2 million of a $5.7 million grant from the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Developed by the Cook Inlet Housing Authority, the complex contains 59 one- and two-bedroom apartments that are available to Alaskans aged 55 and older and is located within an existing senior community, Centennial Village. "I commend CIHA for successfully leveraging HUD support, including Recovery Act money and its annual Indian Housing Block Grants, to build vital affordable housing for the elderly in this community," said Department of Housing and Urban Development Assistant Secretary Sandra Henriquez. "In addition to providing much needed housing for this population, the housing authority and its partners on this project have also strengthened the local economy by putting people in this region to work." Often moving out of home and into a smaller apartment can be a more affordable option for older homeowners who don't want to manage the large space of a single-family home. Making that move can be made easier with portable storage units.
