Some workers are turning down better jobs because of difficulty moving
Homeowners are approaching new jobs with more caution than ever, especially since relocating for work in today's economy is not as easy as it once was.
Many workers are finding that they've had to second-guess job offers from far away because the state of the housing market leaves them unable to sell their home quickly, reported the New York Times. For some, weighing the benefits of their new job with the difficulty of moving has become an even more serious endeavor. The report added that even some unemployed people have had to turn down a job offer to avoid moving. Job seekers also find themselves able to negotiate more for relocation assistance, since in many cases companies don't want their new employee worrying about their moving obligations or even turning down the job because of them. As a result, many workers are getting financial incentives from their companies to move. There are ways of getting around the housing market's struggles, the report said. Instead of buying a new home, some homeowners are renting in their new location. Renting has also helped homeowners who can't sell their old home. Some have even taken to dividing up their homes into multiple apartments and renting each unit as an additional form of income, reported the Seattle Times. More News |
