Forbes ranked Madison, Wisconsin the best city for an active retirement.
People vary in their retirement desires, but for those interested in moving to a city where they can stay active after they stop working, some locations offer more opportunities than others, according to Forbes.
The company recently ranked the top 25 places that would allow retirees to stay mentally and physically stimulated, even though they no longer work every day. The rankings were based on four factors: length and availability of walking and bicycle trails, percentage of adults who volunteer for worthy causes, overall safety and lack of violent crime and number of physicians per capita. The group also limited their pool to cities with a population above 100,000. The number one city was Madison, Wisconsin, where 40 percent of the adult population volunteers, which was the most out of all cities considered. The area also was number six for doctors per capita, and was ranked number seven in Bicycling Magazine's list of the most trail space available. Ranking in second place was Boulder, Colorado, which placed high for the considerable amount of volunteerism there, while rating sixth for bicycle trails. Though many smaller cities and college towns ranked high on the list, some major cities also placed well. New York City came in at 11th place, even faring well in the safety category. More News |
