Professors are a common sight in some college dorms around the country
It's no longer just students who are moving into college dorms around the country.
Many are living just a few doors down from their professors, a practice that hearkens back to the roots of university life, reported the Washington Post. Many professors are jumping on the offer of free rent in exchange for answering students' questions, hosting get-togethers in their rooms or attending floor meetings. Some professors are bringing their families with them, and their close-quarters association with their students allows them to mentor many or form lifelong friendships. Professors told the Post that the unique experience also forces them to be on their toes somewhat, since moving in among students makes many private moments - such as a walk with their spouse or time with their children - on display for many to see. But many say the experience is worth it, since it can help foster a unique relationship with their students and provide a stronger educational environment. "We got to understand their lives in a way I never did in the classroom," Steven Lerman, provost and dorm resident at George Washington University, told the Post. "In American higher education, there ought to be more of this. It can only help the educational process." Traditionally, it is not uncommon for some universities to help arrange housing for faculty. New York University's faculty housing department works to arrange leasing and moving matters directly with faculty. More News |
