Workers have to weigh the benefits of relocating for a job
The current economy has made relocating for work a more sensitive consideration than ever for many workers.
Career coach Terri Lee Ryan wrote for Chicago Now that relocating for work can be a smart decision for many if they have the right priorities in mind. Some workers are flexible or have little tying them down to their current location, and as a result, moving might be an easier decision, Ryan wrote. But for others, issues of family, home and finances might make relocating for work a more complex decision. In order to make the best decision, Ryan advises workers to evaluate why they're moving in the first place. Whether it's for more money, more opportunities or a lack of work in their current location, moving should help a person get closer to achieving their career goals. Additionally, workers are advised to research potential locations well ahead of time and consider factors such as climate, demographics, cost-of-living and housing finances. If one or more of these factors doesn't work in their favor, they may want to reconsider moving. Workers with families should also make sure to clear things with their spouse and run the decision by their children, since they will also be affected by the relocation, said the report. Once they've committed to moving, many workers may want to consider relocating to Texas. A report by the Milken Institute highlighted a number of cities there for their strong jobs markets.
