Downsizing may be the key to retirement happiness
People may be attached to the homes they raised their children in, or have lived in for years, but relocating after retirement is becoming increasingly popular, according to New Retirement. Half of all baby boomers plan to pack up their homes and move to a new location to begin the next chapter of their lives.
As people retire they are often living on a fixed income, so lowering or eliminating their mortgage payment is ideal, according to the news source. For people that do not have the money to buy a smaller home right away, just paying down the mortgage may help alleviate some financial burdens. Moving out of a neighborhood with a good school district and higher taxes can allow retirees to save significant money on housing costs. As the needs of homeowners change dramatically, their housing options may change as well, according to New Retirement. As retirees tend to have more free time, living in a community of like-minded people may be crucial for maintaining a happy lifestyle, according to The Independent.
