Sacramento holds on to their Kings for now
In an effort to revive their team, Sacramento Kings owners the Maloof brothers had been trying to relocate to Anaheim, California, according to The Sacramento Bee. The owners, concerned with the city's inability to find funding for a new home area had been seeking approval from the league for months.
The league did not support the move, namely due to the fact that they were unsure if Southern California could support three professional basketball teams, according to Sports Grid. The situation was further complicated by the fact that Sacramento Mayor, and former NBA player, Kevin Johnson raised $10 million to entice the team not to relocate. "Out of respect to Kings fans and the regional business community, we have decided to remain in Sacramento for the 2011-12 season," the Maloof's said in a statement to the Bee. Experts believe that this is merely a one-year stall and the team will move, with the blessing of the league, after next season, according to the source. Anaheim Ducks owner Henry Samueli has said he will loan $75 million to the brothers if they relocate, to renovate the Honda Center, where both teams would play, according to the Sports Grid.
