Moving into a college dorm can be a stressful - and expensive - endeavor
Officials at all of Arizona State University's campuses are ready for the arrival of thousands of new students.
Volunteer students and faculty will be on hand to help carry luggage, give directions and provide refreshments at ASU's multiple campuses, reported the Arizona Republic. According to the paper, the university's Polytechnic campus expected 1,000 new students on moving day, while its Downtown Phoenix campus will move in 1,200 new collegians. About 10,000 students will be moved in during separate stages at the Tempe campus, which has 14 different residence halls, said the paper. The university requires that freshman live on campus because it says they benefit the most from living in a dorm. "Students who live in residence halls are able to take advantage of so many services that it can't help but benefit them," said ASU housing director Michael Coakley. "They have ready access to academic coaching, counselors, and the whole range of support systems the university offers. They get more involved in campus life and feel connected to the university." On the other hand, many older students are moving into off-campus apartments because they are sometimes cheaper than the room and board fees at a college dorm, reported the University Daily Kansan.
