When moving to a new home, certain items may be better off left behind.
Even for those who aren't moving to a smaller home, downsizing the items that are being transported from an old residence to a new one may be an excellent way to reduce clutter, according to the Northwest Indiana Times.

There are a number of options of ways to get rid of unwanted furniture before moving into a new home. The source recommends holding a garage sale or selling items on online platforms, such as Craigslist or eBay. However, sometimes the more difficult part of the process is determining what to let go of.

According to the source, the major factors that should impact the decision of whether a particular item should be a part of a new residence are fit, cost, hassle, storage and attachment.

Furniture or other items that were suited to fit an old home, are components of other items that have already been sold or may be hassle either logistically or financially to move or store, may not be worth keeping. Additionally, if the money that can be made by selling an item may be more useful to an owner than keeping the item itself, selling may be worth it, the source says. However, items that carry significant emotional attachment may be worth keeping.

Once the items coming along for the move have been decided, getting a full-service moving company may help alleviate the transportation process. Moving can be stressful and assistance may ease the process, particularly for long distance moves or those involving a lot of items.
